Adventurous recruiter, Adrian Swindells from RHL Manchester, has pushed himself to the limit for charity in an ultimate experience – a gruelling trek of 17,500ft (5,400m) to Everest base camp. Adrian and his rugby club team mates faced an incredible 18 day expedition to reach base camp battling bitterly cold nights in frozen sleeping bags and altitude sickness. And all for a good cause, Adrian raised in excess of £3,000 for his local charity, Willow Wood Hospice based in Manchester.

Adrian, Business Development Manager for RHL, had to undergo an extensive training regime to prepare for the expedition spending every weekend walking in any weather in the Peak District where he lives. He also gave up his much beloved golf membership to concentrate on his training.

“The trek to the base camp takes you through the lush valleys of Sagarmatha National Park, including its villages and monasteries,” explains Adrian. “Eight of the world’s 14 peaks that exceed 8,000m are situated in the Nepalese Himalayas with the highest of them all, standing at 8,848m, Everest. At least one member of our party turned back, the going was that tough. Our lungs ached, it took us three hours to walk and climb three kilometres, we were constantly tired, it was warm when we were walking, but bitterly cold, minus 20 degrees at night. We had sun, monsoons, rain and snow, all in a few days, but it was the altitude that was the real killer.”

Unfortunately the exceptionally bad weather meant Adrian couldn’t fulfil his dream and look at the summit of Everest, in fact he could not see more than a few feet in front of him. A truly remarkable experience for Adrian and it doesn’t end there – Adrian is due to tackle the Sahara desert in Summer 2010 to raise more money for charity.
